Harpenden Helping Hand
Do you like driving, meeting new people, exchanging life stories and enjoying being useful?
Drivers: Our volunteer drivers can expect to be offered assignments once or twice a fortnight. This may involve taking someone to hospitals in St Albans, Luton, Hemel, Watford and Stevenage or more locally to doctors’ surgeries, clinics or dentists.
The choice of when you are available and where you prefer to drive is entirely up to you. It’s OK to say ‘no’. We pay expenses of 50p per mile. Our drivers often have wonderful conversations, swapping life stories and reminiscences about Harpenden.
Shopping: Don’t fancy going outside Harpenden, then you could either just give lifts within the town and/or volunteer to help with shopping for those who find it difficult to do so unaided. Our shoppers often get to know their clients and stay on to chat afterwards.
Providing company: would you like to visit some who is housebound to have a friendly chat? Or perhaps relieve a regular care for an hour or two?

If you express an interest in volunteering you will be asked for two references and your consent to a DBS check.
Once you become a volunteer you will be sent a welcome pack which goes into much more detail and explains how you can claim your motoring expenses (mileage and car parking).
You let us know your availability and we try to fit in with that. You do not have to make a regular commitment.
